Today in 1927, the first biweekly Movietone newsreel premiered at the Roxy Theater in New York City.
Newsreels were a source of news, current affairs, and entertainment for millions of moviegoers until television supplanted them in the 1950s. In 2013, Television was still cited as a major source of news by 69% of Americans, followed by a rapidly-rising Internet, cited by 50%.
By 2022, the portion of Americans who often get news from television decreased to 31%. 82% of U.S. adults say they often or sometimes get news from a smartphone, computer or tablet, including 49% who say they do so often. Americans today turn to radio and print publications for news far less frequently than to digital devices and television.
