Today in 1929, the cartoon character Popeye, a sailor known for his love of spinach, made his debut, appearing in the newspaper comic strip Thimble Theatre.
Created by Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye is “a pugnacious, wisecracking cartoon sailor who possesses superhuman strength after ingesting an always-handy can of spinach,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica, whose credo is “I yam what I yam, and that’s all what I yam.”
