Today in 1922, David Sarnoff proposed the idea of a national radio broadcasting service.
As the General Manager of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), Sarnoff wrote in a letter to Elmer Rice Jr., Honorary Chairman of the Board of General Electric Company:
…in seeking a solution to the broadcasting problem, we must recognize that the answer must be along national rather than local lines, for the problem is distinctly a national one… broadcasting represents a job of entertaining, informing, and educating the nation and should, therefore, be distinctly regarded as a public service.
In 1926, RCA launched the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the first broadcast network in the US.
