Today in 2000, concluding the United States v. Microsoft Corporation antitrust case, District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson orders the breakup of Microsoft into two companies, one for the development of operating systems and the other for the development of other applications.
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Judge Jackson's rulings against Microsoft and also found him in violation of the Code of Conduct for US Judges. On November 2, 2001, the U.S. Department of Justice reached an agreement with Microsoft to settle the case.
